Amish builder nailed for OT and child labor violations

Stoltzfus Structures—an Amish-owned light construction company in Chester County, Pennsylvania—will pay $188,572 in back wages and an equal amount in liquidated damages to 47 employees after U.S. Department of Labor investigators found the company failed to keep accurate records of hours worked and to pay proper overtime.

Additionally, investigators found several incidents of child labor violations that resulted in a fine of $30,800.

Investigators found the company hired a 16-year-old who was severely injured while operating a table saw. Six other 16-year-olds were permitted to use pneumatic-powered staple guns and battery-powered drills. Three 15-year-olds were permitted to use power wood-working equipment.
