Want to pay for performance? Take a long-range view to avoid problems. Some incentive-pay plans are designed in a shortsighted manner by rewarding workers for the wrong efforts. A plan that pays bonuses to those who cut costs may appear sensible, but it can prove misguided. That’s because employees who are overeager to cut costs may lose sight of value-added services that could produce additional pockets of profit.
