If you sense you’re taken for granted, don’t talk about it. Do something!

Suggest to your boss how you can make a bigger contribution. Network with department heads on how you can help solve their problems. When meeting with higher-ups, praise your staff. This reflects positively on your leadership without your having to say so.

Also, look beyond your organization for opportunities. Write articles for trade publications. Serve as a guest speaker at meetings of your professional association. Join community outreach campaigns or nonprofit boards.

Through all these steps, you’ll gain a higher profile both inside and outside your organization. Your new visibility will make it hard for any boss to overlook you.
