Brandishing a plastic bag containing 79 cents, Gov. Tom Wolf announced an executive order barring most Pennsylvania government offices from asking for an applicant’s salary history during the hiring process.

The 79 cents is the amount Wolf claims women earn compared to the dollar men earn for performing comparable work. The salary history ban is designed to lessen the impact of previous pay discrimination and close the pay gap between women and men.

The order affects approximately 2,000 management positions. Wolf said his goal was to work with public-sector unions to further close the pay gap.
