Watch out for these common email practices that undermine your employees’ most important work:

1. Hyper-responsiveness. When people are checking and responding to email constantly, that means they’re not getting high-priority work done. Make sure they know it’s OK if they don’t get back to you immediately.

2. Night and weekend “check-ins.” The classic slippery slope. This is not cool unless it’s a true emergency. Set parameters in advance.

3. Over-cc’ing. Every person copied on every email should have a good reason for being there. Establish a protocol so that nobody has to waste decision-making energy on who gets what.
