You’ve just been offered a new position or promotion, but you aren’t sure if it’s the right fit for you. What should you do next? Follow these tips:

Show your gratitude. Always say “thank you” for the offer—even if in your gut, you know you are going to turn it down.

Don’t immediately accept. You may be very excited about the opportunity, but give yourself at least 24 hours to review all the details, talk to loved ones or mentors, and ensure the move is in your best interest.

Say: “I appreciate the offer so much. May I take a day or two to think about it?” Most managers won’t have an issue with this.

Investigate the position. Find out what your responsibilities will be and the expectations for the job. Weigh the pros and cons, and decide if the change fits your career goals. A higher salary or more perks may be enticing, but you won’t be satisfied if you take a job that isn’t right for you.
