Workplace deaths reach highest total since 2008

The number of workers killed on the job reached 5,190 in 2016, the third straight year of increases and the highest number since 2008, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The fatal injury rate reached 3.6 fatalities per 100,000 full-time workers in 2016. The top five causes (in order): transportation incidents, violence, falls/slips, contact with an object and exposure to harmful substances.
