Q. The nature of our business is up and down. All the volatility makes it fun for me, but some members of our team aren’t very good at handling the uncertainty. They get frazzled and don’t deal well with sudden lulls and surges in activity. Are there ways to help people take volatility in stride?

A. That’s a hard one. I’ve never worked in a volatile industry; I guess I’ve been lucky to toil away in more stable, boring businesses. My hunch is camaraderie matters even more when people come to expect the unexpected. If they can gain strength from each other, they can withstand swings more effectively. So I suggest team-building exercises and morale boosts, from weekend picnics to fun group outings. And praise whenever you can, especially during frantic times. Expressing sincere gratitude is priceless. It gives people assurance when they need it most.
