Q. I volunteered to serve on a committee to boost my visibility here. But I keep getting assigned time-consuming projects on top of my normal job. The projects aren’t very interesting, and it feels like the committee chair is just dumping chores on my lap. Should I quit this stupid committee?

A. It sounds like even if you are raising your profile, you don’t think it’s worth the trouble. For decades, I’ve said that getting ahead boils down to taking on dreary assignments with alacrity. Laboring without complaint—and producing consistently stellar results—almost always pays off in the end. You never know whom you will impress when you take on unsexy work. Hang in there, at least for another few months.
