Jeffrey Citron likes to work in disruptive technologies, and boy, did he ever pick a couple: securities and phones.

In 1996, he started Datek Online and made a fortune by automating stock trading. After crossing swords with the SEC, in 2001 he founded Vonage, which lets people make phone calls over the Internet.

The telecom industry, he says, was ripe for someone to take a fresh look and ask, “What can we do differently?” It hadn’t changed much in almost a century, and the iPhone was still six years away.

“There are lots of naysayers,” he says. “They just don’t have the vision and the forethought to see how the world’s going to change.”
