Counting calories alone won’t improve your health. You need to take into account more than just calories, such as protein, carbohydrates and vitamins. Calories are important to watch, but they’re not the only thing.

A low-fat diet won’t ensure weight loss. There are healthy fats out there that your body needs, so eating nuts, fish and avocados are important in moderation.

You don’t need a cleanse or detox to kick off a diet. Your kidneys and liver are built-in detoxifiers that filter many of the harmful things you consume.

Supplements are unnecessary and sometimes harmful. The most potentially harmful supplements are those promising weight loss, increased muscle mass and enhanced sexual performance.

Gluten likely won’t hurt your digestive system. It’s unnecessary to avoid gluten unless you have celiac disease.

Almond milk isn’t nutritionally better than cow’s milk. Low-fat cow’s milk contains protein, while almond milk does not. Also, the vitamins in almond milk are added in production, so it’s more difficult for your body to absorb them.

You don’t have to avoid MSG. This ingredient is added to many foods as a flavoring, and it’s safe.

There is no legal or medical definition of a “superfood.” Some foods have more healthy properties than others, but nutritionists and public health officials rarely use the term “superfood.”
