Employee name/SSN mismatch problems arise unexpectedly

Question: Our new 401(k) plan provider informed us that three employees’ names and Social Security numbers don’t match. We checked the photocopies of their Social Security cards and two matched our files. What should we do? Should we notify the Social Security Administration?

Answer: All three cards could be fake, even the two that matched your records. You don’t need to notify the SSA, but you should ask these employees to show you their cards again. You can then use the SSA’s Social Security Number Verification Service to get to the root ...(register to read more)
