Can I turn down a vacation request?
Q. As an employer, am I required to agree to all vacation requests my staff members submit?
A. According to the California Department of Industrial Relations, an employer is not required to grant all vacation requests. Employers can control “when vacation can be taken and the amount of vacation that may be taken at any particular time.”
You may want to include a uniform vacation policy in your handbook and implement it consistently to avoid claims of discrimination. A vacation policy can specify how much notice an employee must provide for vacation and how much leave can be taken at one time.
