Seventy percent of employers use social media to screen candidates before hiring, according to a new survey by Harris Poll and CareerBuilder.com. That’s up significantly from 60% last year and 11% in 2006.

Employers say they use social networking sites to look for information that supports applicant qualifications (61%), see if a candidate has a professional online presence (50%), read what other people post about the applicant (37%) and find reasons not to hire someone (24%).
