Many teams are finding themselves saving email for longer correspondences or anything external. For other things, there’s Slack.

Hallie Newman, digital traffic manager at Delphic Digital in Philadelphia, offers three things you should know about this handy app:

1. If your desktop and mobile device notify you every time there’s activity on Slack, it can be a worse distraction than email. Mute the channels you don’t want to follow, and choose to be notified only when your name or certain highlighted words are used. Additionally, use the “Do Not Disturb” button so you can focus on the task at hand.

2. Delphic has set up Slack to automatically pull items from the company’s Google-based calendar to alert employees about selected upcoming events, Newman says. “My company uses the ‘Events’ channel to highlight anything we’d like our staff to know about.”

3. “A lot of people on our team use starred items as a way to keep track of items that people ask of them throughout the day,” Newman notes. This setup lets them avoid marking messages as unread to keep them from getting lost amid numerous other messages that don’t require action.
