Q. There’s a big gap between the desired performance that I’d like from people—and their actual output. Apparently, I demand too much (at least that’s what I hear from employee engagement surveys). What am I supposed to do? Lower my standards?

A. Do not lower anything. People hated me for demanding too much—for pushing them beyond what they thought was reasonable—but you know what? They did push harder. They did produce more. Turnover wasn’t bad either, because I paid them well and praised them when they earned it. And boy, did we celebrate when they pulled it off. If results aren’t acceptable to you, find out why. Give workers the tools and resources to succeed. And keep setting a high bar.
