Motivating low-wage earners

Employees whose pay is just above minimum wage usually have trouble connecting their tasks with the big picture. And that disconnection is often at the root of their lack of motivation.

Here are some things you can do to help them:

Rather than tell employees how the organization appreciates what they do, have them tell you how they feel their efforts are important to the mission. This will give you insight to see where the disconnect lies and an opportunity to help workers see their tasks in a whole new light.

You can also routinely and assertively include them in any management decision that affects them. Once employees know they will be asked to offer their input into workplace decisions, they will be better motivated.

For example, “We have some money for advertising and marketing, and I’m asking everyone to help me decide how to spend it. After all, you’re the ones who see the customers all day, every day. What do you think makes them want to come here?”
