To refocus your team at the start of a project, use this exercise. Ask employees to write a letter to you, dated for the day after the project is set to wrap. Use these prompts:

Dear __________,

We excelled during this project because we ____________. The most important thing we accomplished was ___________. We faced these challenges __________, but we did __________ to overcome them. During the process, we/I became much better at ______________. We also learned ____________, which is going to help us with our next initiative. Because of our hard work, the organization will benefit in these ways ______________.

Sincerely, _____________

The goal: To encourage your team to think about what a successful project would look like and decide which behaviors and actions will help them achieve that. It doesn’t have to turn out to be 100% accurate. The beauty is in the exercise itself, and how motivating it truly can be.
