When you meet someone for the first time, ask the right questions to create instant rapport and build a foundation for a long-lasting relationship. Use these tips:

Avoid the “Yes” or “No” answer. To keep the conversation going, ask open-ended questions. For example, “How long have you worked in the industry?” or “What did you like most about the presentation?”

Ask for their opinions or advice. Seeking someone’s input or expertise is a great way to start a conversation. Most people want to help in some way, and their responses can often segue into other topics.

Pose a hypothetical question. Once the two of you have warmed up to one another, ask hypothetical questions to gain more insight about the person. For example, you might ask “If you had an unlimited budget, what are the first three changes you would make in your department?”
