Talking about your career path with your boss can raise your anxiety level, but such discussions are necessary to help you clarify your future goals. You should never have doubts about what you’re working toward each day. Corey Wainwright, writing at HubSpot, says to consider these factors when planning for such a conversation with your boss:

Think about it ahead of time. Your boss won’t tell you what you want. Before your conversation, reflect on your future, what you want to do and your questions.

Consider your relationship with your boss. How well you know your boss will play a role in how the conversation will go. The better you know each other, the easier it will be to talk.

Make sure the timing’s right. This topic requires some thought, so plan the conversation. Schedule a meeting dedicated only to this topic to give yourself time to prepare and to talk.

Work hard at your job now. Before you can look to the future, you have to take your current responsibilities seriously. Be dependable and reliable to show your boss that you’re ready for the next step.
