A former Pittsburgh news anchor whose social media post led to community outrage and her eventual firing is suing the TV station where she worked.

Following a mass shooting last year in the predominantly black city of Wilkinsburg, WTAE anchor Wendy Bell took to her Facebook. She wrote, “You needn’t be a criminal profiler to draw a mental sketch of the killers who broke so many hearts two weeks ago Wednesday. They are young black men, likely in their teens or in their early 20s. They have multiple siblings from multiple fathers and their mothers work multiple jobs. These boys have been in the system before. They’ve grown up there. They know the police. They’ve been arrested.”

Police had not named any suspects in the shooting at the time.

Critics called the post racist and accused Bell of having a “white savior” complex.

Bell’s lawsuit claims her firing was racially motivated and that her punishment was more severe than other co-workers who broke company rules. In one instance, she alleges an employee made lewd comments to interns without being disciplined. Bell also alleges that reporter who was arrested for soliciting prostitution from an undercover policewoman kept his job.

Bell’s attorney has suggested she may amend her complaint to include a gender discrimination claim.

Have to admit, Eric Holder was right – though in the inverse. We are cowards who are afraid to discuss our racial problems. The truth, as Ms Bell well puts it, is unwelcome. Mr Holder, on the other hand, is unwilling to admit that we have a community of absent fathers and overburdened single moms. The result: Undisciplined, lost children; boys that no-one teaches to be men; boys who turn to the street for their values and mores. We have a president that could help, but he seems to prefer it this way.
