How do we complete I-9s for out-of-state staff?

Q. Some of our employees work in other states out of their homes. For completing the I-9 Forms, can I use a notary public to verify employees’ documents?

A. Yes, you can. The notary is acting as your agent and must complete Part 2. The notary will not be using his or her seal. Employers select their authorized representatives, and you could, for example, use HR staff from a local company. The timelines for completing the I-9 remain the same.
