Technology today means that even when we are off the clock, we can quickly be connected back to the workplace with a text message or email. So, finding the balance between work and life—when to answer the email and when to wait—is important for one’s well-being. Fred Mouawad offers tips at EHS Today that can help you achieve this balance.

• 24/7 connection does not equal productivity. Constantly checking your phone, replying to emails or taking work calls may seem like you are being productive, but you are taking away from whatever moment you are in. If you are in a business meeting and preoccupied with your phone, you will miss important information. The same applies if you are off the clock and answering messages during a family dinner.

• Find your own work-life balance. There is only so much time in a day, so plan accordingly. Figure out the time you need for work and the time you have to do everything else. For people with flexible schedules, make sure you set out enough time for work so you don’t underschedule and end up struggling to complete tasks.

• Remote workers need a high degree of self-discipline. Working from home presents its own problems. You may get distracted and do things around the house, or you might never know when to quit working, leading to burnout. To be a successful remote worker, you need to set clear goals, plan ahead and track your time. Although your schedule is more flexible than a traditional worker’s, you need to have control to finish the tasks at hand.

• You can have both work-life balance and a flexible schedule. The key is to not procrastinate on your work just because you have a flexible schedule. Instead, you need to set daily goals to create a balance and handle your flexible schedule. The goals will keep you on track to finish your work and then have time to do whatever you would like afterward.
