Andrew Faas, 66, is a management advi­­sor based in Toronto. He’s the author of The Bully’s Trap. Faas spent 33 years as a top executive at Cana­­dian retailers Loblaw and Shoppers Drug Mart.

Executive Leadership newsletter: What lessons have you learned about leadership over your career?

Faas: At age 26, I was called out for being a bully. I was working in the auto industry in a tough environment. The way people got ahead was through fear and harassment.

EL: Were you aware you were a bully?  

Faas: One day, [my boss] asked my advice. He was having trouble with a bully, an “SOB” who was making everyone’s life miserable. I replied, “I’d fire the SOB.” Then he removed his pipe from his mouth and said, “Well, you’re the SOB I’m talking about.”

EL: So what happened?
