Here are four innocent management moves that make good employees quit, and how to avoid them.

Mistake #1: Piling the work on a select few. When managers know who can pull off the toughest challenges or perform under pressure, they tend to load more work on that employee. But, this common managerial mistake drives top performers out the door, especially if tasks assigned don’t stimulate them creatively, align with their title and compensation, or otherwise help to advance their career.

How to avoid it: When you have a problem your top performer is best equipped to manage, ask what can be moved off their priority list and reassigned.
