California Attorney General Kamala Harris has joined attorneys general from across the nation pressing large retailers to make their employees’ schedules more predictable. A mid-April letter from Harris and eight other AGs to 15 companies such as American Eagle Outfitters, Forever 21 and Payless ShoeSource signals a new stage in the movement to help employees know for sure when they’re scheduled to work and for how long.

Workers’ rights groups have been pushing state and local governments to clamp down on employers that change worker schedules at the last minute, schedule multiple workers for peak times and send some home after the rush. Just as maddening for employees: Short-notice call-in scheduling that requires workers to be prepared to come to work at any time.
