You provide vacation. Why don’t employees take it?

Memorial Day—the unofficial start to summer—just whizzed by, which means that employees will be scrambling to take vacation days, extending long weekends and otherwise causing havoc with scheduling. Or maybe not. The latest trend is to ditch allotted vacation time in favor of unlimited vacation days. And, there’s another benefit to nonaccruing vacation time: No payouts for employees who terminate with accrued time left in their leave banks. 

Having a wonderful time, wish you were here. Unlimited vacation isn’t a free-for-all. Key: establishing clear measurable performance goals (e.g., billable hours, client retention rates, projects completed) for every employee. And there is some structure to these types of policies. Employees don’t just disappear; they must let their managers know their plans, and their plans must fit into the company’s operations (so no vacations during the company’s busy season).
