Retail giant Target, based in Minneapolis, has become a flashpoint in the culture wars over the suddenly urgent issue of transgender bathroom use.

In the wake of recent legislation in North Carolina and Mississippi, Target announced that employees and customers are free to use whichever bathroom or fitting room suits their current gender identity.

The North Carolina and Mississippi laws require citizens to use the public restroom of the gender listed on their birth certificate. A proposed Minnesota law would limit access to restrooms, locker rooms and fitting rooms based on an individual’s “biological sex.”

Target’s statement said, “We welcome transgender team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity. Everyone deserves to feel like they belong.”

Note: Letting employees and patrons determine for themselves which restroom to use is probably the most practical approach to this issue.
