When you announce a change or share not-so-positive news, employees may respond with complaints or even defiance. Use these statements to break through the resistance, and encourage your team to work together.

  • “Yes, this is a tough situation. That’s why I want to hear your input.”
  • “What does this situation look like from your perspective? What key insight am I missing?”
  • “I expect your pushback, and I will answer your questions and address your concerns as best as I can.”
  • “I understand your objections. Now, how do you suggest we tackle this situation?”
  • “What is the worst that can happen if we follow this plan? How can we overcome any challenges?”
  • “Tell me more about your concerns, so we can address any obstacles and make this transition as smooth as possible.”

Once you have made one of those statements, refocus the group on your goals and action plan.
