If you’re looking to get ahead in your admin career and not sure where to start, consider focusing on project management, writes Art Petty for About Money. Here are a few things project management can teach you:

  • Unique challenges. Projects introduce new challenges every single day. You will improve your ability to think quickly, as well as come up with creative solutions for the problems you encounter. It will also give you a guide on how to handle other leadership challenges in the future.
  • What is needed to meet your company’s needs. The success of any project is dependent on how it helps the customer or company. This includes overseeing project quality, timing, budgeting and resource management. Learning how to manage stakeholders will give you a peek into the world of negotiation, diplomacy and communication.
  • Time management skills. To keep a project on track, you have to keep a running schedule of deadlines, as well as making your expectations known. Being able to schedule the right resources at the right time will teach you how to manage your time effectively so that the project gets done sooner rather than later.
  • Better ways to handle stressful situations. Getting involved in project management will boost your communication skills so you can better diffuse stressful situations in the future.
  • Financial responsibility. Project managers are in charge of managing the budget of a project. You can make your project more successful by increasing your team’s efficiency, which will then decrease the amount of money needed to make the project successful. Having this financial knowledge can help you outside of project management, and is especially helpful when leading a company.
