OK, so you despise your job. Despise it. Gone is the belief that it’s leading anywhere but the cold gray corridors of quiet desperation, and gone is the energy to rise above the nonsense. You’re in full crisis mode, and let’s not pretend there’s going to be a way out anytime soon. If you want a first aid kit to patch the pain and maybe bring just a little daylight through the window beside your lousy, stupid, awful desk, try these tips:

1. Become 50% more interesting. Five o’clock shouldn’t make you think, “Now at least I can go home and pass out”; it needs to bring thoughts of excitement about what’s coming up at 5:30. Realistically, about half our adult lives is spent on the job; the more vivid your life is outside it, the more that fraction will seem to shrink.
