One tool Lakshmi Narayanan has used to build teamwork is an affair called “annual day,” in which top performers come onstage and receive a trophy, often presented by a customer.

The former chief executive of Cognizant Technology Solutions, an American multinational corporation, staged these events at job sites throughout India, at which more than 22,000 employees, family members and customers would attend.

One team won for beating its previous records for delivery, another for fulfilling an order with zero defects, and a third for working around the clock for three days to solve a customer’s problem.

“There are no individual heroes,” Narayanan says. “Once you put the right team together, they’re capable of accomplishing everything.”
