Pay or stay? A new bill may allow the IRS to stop tax debtors from leaving the country.

Under the “Trade Facili­­tation and Trade Enforcement Act of 2015” (S. 1269), approved by the Senate on May 14, the tax law would be amended to permit authorities to revoke or deny a passport for U.S. taxpayers who have unpaid taxes of at least $50,000 or don’t provide their Social Security number. But a similar measure in Congress failed last year.
