IRS update from American Payroll Annual Congress

The one sure bet is that the IRS will come to the American Payroll Association’s Annual Congress prepared to discuss its payroll-related initiatives. This year’s 33rd Annual Congress was held in Las Vegas. The IRS’ Anita Bartels, Manager, Midstates Territory, SB/SE Employment Tax, hosted the workshop.

Payroll NRP. Those intensive line-by-line Form 941 audits, conducted over the past several years under the auspices of the IRS’ National Research Project (NRP), are now 99% completed, Bartels announced. The NRP’s goal is to identify trends in payroll taxes and reporting, which will shape the scope of future payroll audits, she said. Many NRP audits resulted in no change, she noted, and what’s left are audits that resulted in changes to a company’s payroll tax liability.

However, the NRP’s overall results won’t be released until the IRS analyzes the results, Bartels added.
