Everyone needs a mentor, a coach and a sponsor to help them grow and excel in their careers, says Brazen Careerist writer Lorena Knapp. She explains what each does to help.

Mentor. This is typically someone in your profession who can offer you advice and serve as a role model.

A mentor will be involved in your growth as an individual and primarily focusses on listening, rather than giving feedback.

Coach. A coach is more focused on a specific aspect of your performance and will often coach you to success on a particular project or until you achieve a particular result.

Sponsor. This person is involved with you to share her connections and experience and is willing to promote you to her colleagues. Sponsorship is usually earned.
