What is one of the top skills needed for a successful IT career? Interpersonal communication, says Eric Bloom, a former CIO, and president of Manager Mechanics LLC, a company specializing in IT leadership development.

In addition to learning the newest technologies and gaining certificates, Bloom advises anyone in IT to ask, “How can I enhance my interpersonal communication skills?”

While technical know-how is imperative for entry-level positions, as employees move into leadership positions, they need to be able to communicate effectively with employees and co-workers.

Bloom’s advice to IT professionals: Stop using confusing jargon, “tech speak,” and acronyms with nontechnical co-workers. Most don’t want to know the ins and outs of how their technology works. They just want to know you fixed their problem.
