Employees may complain to you that their jobs are too difficult. However, a little probing usually reveals they’re referring to stumbling blocks that, in total, constitute only a small part of their workdays.

Because those stumbling blocks are so frustrating, they can make team members feel everything is too difficult. Help them with a technique called the “one-minute struggle.”

When you reach a stumbling block, struggle for no more than one minute. Beyond that, the odds are small you’ll overcome the obstacle on your own.

After that minute, ask: “Should I get help? Or is this a problem I can afford to ignore?” Limiting yourself to one-minute struggles can often cut a difficult job down to size.
