How you communicate can make the difference between success and failure when it comes to allowing flexible work arrangements within your department.

It’s vital that all employees remain fully informed about the status of jobs so that work progresses smoothly even when workers with flexible schedules are not in the office.

Best bet: Put everything in writing. Write down objectives and time frames for each job. Post the list in a central location in the office where everyone involved in the project can easily refer to it.

Ask employees to check off, initial and date when they have completed certain tasks or parts of jobs. That way, no one will ever be in doubt about who has done what and when—or about what still needs to be completed.
