Environmental factors have a large effect on productivity and creativity. Examine these three factors to boost productivity within your organization:

  1. Noise level. When offices are too loud, it makes it difficult to concentrate, but the same is often true when it’s too quiet because every tiny sound can be distracting. Ambient noise—environmental noises from an open window perhaps—create the optimal setting for creative thinking.
  2. Temperature. You’ll likely never satisfy everyone in your organization with one temperature, but studies show that 77 degrees is ideal for working conditions. When people are too cold, they make up to 44% more mistakes because they use their energy focusing on staying warm. And being too hot is just miserable.
  3. Lighting. Bright lighting isn’t always the way to go. A study in the Journal of Environmental Psychology proves that dim lighting makes you feel less constrained and more free-thinking, and that enhances creativity.
