Issue a reprimand as soon as possible after you learn that an employee has committed a serious on-the-job transgression.

Here’s why: The longer you wait to offer negative feedback, the more emotional you will become. Your anger or upset feelings are likely to multiply until they become disproportionate to the actual offense.

Strategy: As soon as you become aware of an incident, take a deep breath and tell the worker you need to speak to him or her in private.

Then say: “Chris, your actions were unacceptable. Can you explain why you did that when you know that doing so is against the rules?” That approach also puts the ball back in the employee’s court and makes the staffer take responsibility for the problem.
