Research shows that employees want to be happy at work, and a bump in salary is not the most effective way to achieve this, according to a survey by staffing company Spherion. But the good news is a lot of people already are happy at work, and you can steal some of their secrets to become happier yourself.
• Establish a routine quitting time and stick with it. You’ll look forward to it and be happier, says Gretchen Rubin, author of The Happiness Project.
• Help the office grouch. If you can lessen his load, do it. You’ll both reap the rewards, says University of California, Riverside, psychology professor Sonja Lyubomirsky.
• Keep your work space tidy. The clutter of empty soda cans and coffee mugs is draining, says Rubin.
