If you’re repeatedly passed over for promotions or treated poorly by management, it may be because you’re doing one of these things wrong, says HR expert and blogger Suzanne Lucas.

She advises you avoid:

1.  Treating your boss like a buddy. Texting, “friending” on Facebook and sharing funny tweets is fun, but it will keep your boss from thinking of you as a professional colleague.

2. Using your phone at work. Unless it’s required for your job, you should keep your smartphone usage to 15 minutes or so a day.

3.  Turning down work you think is too hard. Lots of people volunteer for the easy tasks. Taking the hard ones, even if it means working longer hours or that you might fail, will show people you can grow and cut it at the next level.
