With hard hats on, Skanska Construction Group crews all over the country start their day by stretching in 15-minute group exercise classes right on their job sites.

The 7 a.m. Stretch and Flex started in 1996 at the global building firm. Even visiting Chinese artisans who are erecting a statue for the company in Florida are asked to warm up with their temporary colleagues.

Says a project executive at a Florida job site, “Injury-free environment is a way of thinking.”

Project superintendents lead their crews through 12 simple warm-up exercises that increase blood flow and wake up the muscles. Result: The organization reports a substantial decline in back injuries and in stress-related sprains and strains.
