Caring about employees leads to more care about work, clients

On their first day of work, employees of PEP Housing in South Petaluma, Calif., are greeted by a “welcome” sign on their office doors—the boss’s first effort to show the new staff member that he or she “belongs.”

Executive director Mary Stompe says that feeling goes a long way toward keeping employees focused on the organization’s mission to build affordable rental housing for low-income senior citizens.

“Keeping employees engaged and excited about working for PEP Hous­­ing is more than giving an extra vacation day or holiday,” Stomp told reporters after winning a local “best places to work” award. “It involves constant acknowledgment of each employee’s contribution at staff meetings, in the halls, at events and board meetings. Saying ‘you’re doing a great job’ goes a long way with employees.”
