The Government Accountability Office (GAO) is urging the IRS to move up its W-2 filing deadline for employers to Jan. 31 and to raise the threshold for mandatory electronic filing of W-2s. Reason: The GAO thinks this will slow down the growing number of incidents of identity theft involving tax fraud.

Currently, employers have until Feb. 28 to file W-2s with the IRS while e-filing is only required for 250 or more information returns.
