Stress isn't always caused by overwork. Even if you're completely efficient and can manage your workload, you'll still be stressed and demotivated if you don't address behind-the-scenes reasons like these:
- Fear of failure or risk. If you do the best you can, and it's not perfect, or it doesn't happen immediately, what's the worst that can happen? Often, the consequences are a lot less grave than we tell ourselves — and so we're consumed by stress even when doing tasks we've mastered.
- Feelings of incompetence. We also often treat ourselves as if we haven't mastered workplace duties that we're actually quite good at, which ends up being a self-fulfilling prophecy as stress impacts our performance.
- The attitudes of others. Being around high-strung or negative people will make you more stressed, even if you aren't one yourself. Luckily, the reverse is true as well.
