You can hear the cash registers ring even from your desk in the rear of the store. And as always, it makes you feel good. You're particularly pleased with Maria, the new checkout clerk. She's proven to be an honest, hardworking employee, just as you felt she would be when you hired her.

But over the past week or two Maria and Betty, your most experienced register jockey, have gotten into at least half a dozen arguments. You've seen them shooting dark looks at each other. And once, as you walked abruptly into the lunchroom, you caught them in what seemed to be a shouting match.
