Though hiring patterns have gone up and down in recent years, the contingent workforce is here to stay. At some large firms, as many as 30 percent of the workforce are temps, contractors or other types of contingent workers, supplied by outside staffing firms or in-house employee pools.

Not that long ago, bringing on temps was still a short-term tactic to fill gaps in emergencies or help the permanent workforce through busy seasons or big projects. Today, though, companies are increasingly requiring a flexible workforce as part of their ongoing staffing strategy. 

In some industries, like high tech, this has been true for years.
