If you’re looking to get rid of your old smartphone or tablet, you’re probably going to want to clear out the data from it first.

It likely contains a wealth of information that you don’t want to share with whomever gets their hands on it next.

Before you start to wipe it clean, you should back up data you want to keep or transfer it over to any new devices.

Wiping a smartphone or tablet is easier than you might think, according to Rick Broida of PCWorld.

  • On an older Android device, simply tap Menu, Settings, Privacy, Factory data reset.
  • With a newer version of Android, open the Settings app, scroll down to the Personal section, tap Backup & reset, then Factory data reset.
  • On an iOS device, open the Settings app, tap General, then scroll to the bottom and tap Reset. Finally, tap Erase All Content and Settings.
