Among the many pitfalls for risk-takers are fear and overconfidence. If you’re too fearful, you’ll embark on half-hearted risk or engage in trivial, low-stakes miscues. As composer Stephen Sondheim says, “If you’re going to make a mistake, fall off a high rung on the ladder.”

If you’re too confident, you might conclude it’s safe to coast. That can prove costly. As French high-wire artist Philippe Petit said in 1975 (when he was 25 years old), “Many high-wire walkers have died on their last step, thinking they had made it.”
